| LISTEN | Music Maul "Second Story "

For almost two decades MUSIC MAUL main man Trevor Henderson has been writing, recording, and performing his witty, twisted, sincere blend of country twang flavoured, rootsy pop songs. Based in Kingston, Ontario for most of his artistic career, Henderson is the founding member of the little known, but critically lauded Hell Billys. Signed to True North Records in the mid 1990's, the band released two full-length albums, and toured across Canada, sharing the stage with the likes of Sky Diggers, Weeping Tile, and Eels.

In the years since the Hell Billys breakup, Henderson continued to make music on a smaller scale, independently releasing two full-length albums to friends and a few hardcore fans, under the MUSIC MAUL moniker. Aside from their second release, Hoj (2005), featuring the songs of Hell Billys co-founder, Dave Hodge, MUSIC MAUL is a true DIY project. All MUSIC MAUL records (save for a few songs), were written, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Henderson. Not to mention his homemade squeezebox (accordion), and ten-string lapsteel, that drive the twelve tracks on the latest MUSIC MAUL release, BOXY.

BOXY, an aural hallucination of pop hooks, and arrangements that Captain Beefheart would approve of, features Henderson’s unique lyrics, and a squeezebox style all his own, along with bassist, vocalist Sticky Henderson (Hell Billys, Ass Machine, Weeping Tile, The Shit), keyboardist, vocalist, drummer Julia Schall (Ass Machine), guitarist Brent Hough (1977, Bellevue, Hell Billys), drummer, vocalist Sarah Harmer (Weeping Tile), and Shawn Savoie (Van Allen Belt) on guitar, and guitarron.

BOXY will be released on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 via iTunes, Zunior, and Bandcamp digitally, with a limited run of CD's available through the bands web site, and at live shows.

“Like the best 20-year-old They Might Be Giants tunes (they always were a decade or two ahead of the times), Boxy is woozy and reassuring—also somewhat nautical—in all the right places. …it takes a specialized skill set to be able to turn tunes about the daily grind into enjoyable listening.”
Scott Bryson (TelescopeMedia.com)

“…rootsy, hyperactive pop songs. …telling stories in an original and compelling way. …an indiscriminate musical appetite that revels in melody, hooks and the left field. …like Disney music if Walt had been a Czech surrealist puppeteer, and the songs are strong enough to be sung by the campfire with just an acoustic guitar (and maybe a theremin).”
Terence Dick (Broken Pencil)
